FAQ

Skin Cancer Screening at SkinScan
Q: Who is the SkinScan clinic for?
A: We welcome all adults and children who are concerned about moles or skin lesions.

Q: What is dermoscopy?
A: Dermoscopy is a non-invasive diagnostic technique that allows skin lesions to be
examined with enhanced clarity using a handheld device called a dermatoscope. This tool
uses magnification and polarised light to visualise structures beneath the surface of the skin
that are not visible to the naked eye.

Dermoscopy is a highly effective aid in the early detection of skin cancer, particularly
melanoma. Studies have shown that it significantly improves diagnostic accuracy compared
to visual inspection alone, helping to distinguish between benign and malignant lesions more
reliably. It plays a vital role in identifying suspicious moles at an earlier stage when treatment
is most effective.

Q: Do I need a GP referral?
A: No GP referral is required. However, if you have seen your GP or your GP is concerned
about a particular skin lesion, they can send a referral to [email protected]

Q: What happens during a full body scan?
A: The examination is completed in two sections: the upper body is examined first, followed
by the lower body. A dermatoscope is used to carefully assess the skin for any concerning
lesions or moles. The process takes approximately 20 minutes. The approach can be
adapted based on your comfort level—please let us know if you have any preferences or
concerns.

Q: How should I prepare?
  • Wear comfortable clothing that is easy to remove in parts
  • Avoid fake tan and heavy makeup
  • Ideally avoid painted or shellac nails
  • Bring a hair tie if you have long hair

Q: Is the examination safe in pregnancy?
A: Yes – dermoscopy and skin exams are safe during pregnancy.

Q: What if I have mobility issues?
A: We can adapt the exam to your needs. Please let us know in advance.

Q: Does SkinScan treat eczema or rashes?
A: No. We are not a general dermatology clinic. We specialise solely in the assessment of
suspicious moles and skin lesions.
