Understanding Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in Ireland and globally.

Rates are increasing each year, largely due to greater sun exposure and changes in UV habits.

Early detection through regular skin checks plays a crucial role in reducing serious outcomes and improving survival.
Skin Cancer Awareness & Prevention
Skin cancer is the most common cancer in Ireland, but early detection significantly improves
outcomes. Knowing what to look for can save lives.

The ABCDEs of Melanoma
A – Asymmetry: One half doesn’t match the other
B – Border: Irregular or blurred edges
C – Colour: Varies across the mole
D – Diameter: Larger than 6mm
E – Evolving: Changing in size, shape, or colour

Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer (NMSC)
  • Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC): Most common type; slow growing, rarely spreads. Often appears as a shiny bump or sore that won’t heal.
  • Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC): May look like a scaly red patch, open sore, or wart. Can spread if not treated early.

Self-Examination Tips
Perform a head-to-toe check regularly, ideally in good lighting.
  • Use a full-length mirror and a hand mirror to inspect all areas, including the back, scalp, soles of feet, and between toes.
  • Enlist the help of a partner or family member to check areas you can’t see.
  • Take note of any new, changing, or unusual spots, moles, or lesions.
  • Document moles with photographs for comparison over time.
  • Look for lesions that bleed, itch, crust, or don’t heal.
  • Early detection is key—if in doubt, get it checked.
